- Be Damned if You Do or Damned if You Don't
Make no mistake about it. There is wide spread anger across America for good reason. The economy is - like much of the Western World - in a severe recession bordering if not actually in adepression. Worse - the prospects for a timely good prognosis are fair to bad.
Add to this gloomy atmosphere the wrong headed obsession with austerity without a corresponding pro growth policy and you have a recipe for continuing and probably worsening economic pain, with accompanying distrust in the totality of the government.
If this wasn't bad enough because it is all happening on the President's watch he is the main target for all those who wish to do no more than attribute blame and avoid the really hard work of leading by providing creative solutions.
And in the midst of all of this - those loyal citizens - those self proclaimed champions of the "American People" - attack the president for his lack of a jobs plan - conveniently overriding the fact that their exclusive preoccupation since January has been the fight about the debt ceiling and attempts to roll back the abortion laws.
Now that the debt ceiling is out of the way the Republican leadership has no other option than to join in on what is the real priority issue facing America which is , of course, the need to create jobs.
The President - a man of integrity, intelligence, true compassion and political smarts - recognizing the need for a jobs plan that has a reasonable chance of being passed by an obstructionist Republican party - indicates that a jobs plan is imminent - craftily stating that many of its provisions are those that the compassionate Republican leadership has already endorsed.
In this connection it is noteworthy that Karl Rove - a leading spokesman for the Republican leadership - states the following:
"“This is the seventh or eighth or ninth time we’ve heard the president talk about producing a plan...And each time that he’s gotten around to tossing an idea out on the table, it has included only more spending, more deficit, more debt and the American people are fed up with it.”
So if it has been previously unclear as to what the Republican leadership really intends concerning the present economic mess - there should now be no more confusion as to what it is. The Republican leadership has stated - months ago - that their core objective was and is - to prevent the President from having a second term.
Who is kidding whom? Of course it will take increased spending to create jobs. So if and when the President's job bill gets defeated the same Republican leadership will rise up in mass and condemn the President for his lack of leadership.
Therefore no truly compassionate American must not passively hope for the best but draw a political line in the sand insisting the President act like President Roosevelt, and Truman- who when similarly faced with the same narrowly interested crowd - overrode their 'rise above the fray' positions becoming the collective voice of the most fair and reasonable among the majority of the American people.
