LIKE A TRANQUILIZER IN THE MEDICINE CABINET
At the beginning of a long term psychoanalysis I was a nervous wreck. I, like many people needing intensive therapy, suffered from a convergence of near overwhelming feelings including panic anxiety, depression, and tension.
About the fifth session my analyst picked up on the fact that I was stressed out asking me how I coped with it. Not very well I answered. I just endure it hoping it will never happen again but knowing it always comes back. Presenting me with a novel concept he said "You need to have the experience of creating a perfect environment." What I came up with follows:
The next Saturday I was alone in my apartment all day. I filled my bathtub with a just right mixture of hot and cold water. I turned off the lights. I lit 4 candles. I opened a bottle of a Italian mellow table wine, and turned on some of my favorite classical music. Topping off my creation I blew up a small inflatable bathroom pillow I bought at Bloomingdales that hooked onto the bathroom tiles so I could comfortably rest my head while I was soaking myself in the tub.
I stayed in the tib for what seemed to be hours. I lost all sense of linear time as I found myself progressively fusing with the sensuous atmosphere. The convergence of the expereince of the just right temperature of the water, the candle light, the wine, the pot, the classical music, the feel of the comfortable pillow combined to induce an exquiste altered state of perfect relaxtion.
When I eventually got of the tub and out of the bathroom into my 'living room' I felt as if I felt transformed. I actively coped with my stress in a way that at least for a time completly reduced it to nothing. Pain was converted into pleasure by my having taken a small degree of action to arrange a perfect environment for myself.
Much much later in my analysis when I was also being a psychotherapist I would realize that the altered state that I had created - following my sensitve analyst's lead - was the equivalent of what a new born would likely experience in an atmosphere of being unconditionally loved, comforted, tenderized. This has been referred to a state of at one ment.
Whereas this experience was unforgettable in and of itself it has had unexpected benefits. Life being what it is induces stress whether I like it or not. So while I learned I can take active steps to cope with it I can't prevent it from reoccuring. So one might reasonably concur that at such stressful moments I would recreate my perfect environment. And inm fact I do but not literally. All I need to do to obtain the effects of my perfect envoronment is to remember what I did and how I felt and that memory is enough to calm me down.
My conclusion is that sometimes when psychological conditions are just right - like all of the major planets being in aliignment - a little bit of synergy can and does have powerful healing powers.
So next time any of you feel stressed out you might try out my prescription of making your own perfect environment and hopefully match the same unexpected benefits as myself.
ENJOY!
Breast Self Exam
Healthy Changes Through Life: Doing a monthly breast self exam is the best way to stay familiar with the cyclical changes in your breasts. You will get to know the territory better than your health care team, and will spot changes easily. Having an annual clinical exam helps document your breast health, so keep a regular appointment set up for that! Between puberty and menopause, your breasts will go through many changes, which are affected by hormones, diet, and exercise. Most of these changes are natural and healthy!
Teen Years (Puberty): In the teen years, with the start of your monthly cycle, your body enters the maturing process, and you gain curves and may notice skin changes (such as acne) and even hair may change color or texture. Breast tissue is developing during this time too, and may be dense and firm to begin with, especially if you are small-breasted.Family Resemblance: At this stage, it’s not too early to know your family health history, so ask your female relatives (mother, aunts, grandmother) if they had any fibrocystic problems with their breasts, or any regular cysts. If so, it’s likely that you may experience those too. Not to worry – cysts are benign – but you want to know where they are, and if they come and go, so they can be distinguished from other features in your breasts.'
More Curves and Kids (Childbearing Years): After your body is prepared for motherhood, if you conceive and bear children, and also if you breastfeed the children, that will bring on more changes in your breasts, as well as in the rest of your body. Breasts may become larger and more tender during pregnancy, and may need more support. Don’t neglect your BSE during this time, stay familiar with the changes. Remember that pregnancy and breastfeeding will help combine to lower your risk of breast cancer.
Maturity (Menopause): Menopause also brings changes in your breasts, as your estrogen and progesterone levels drop, your breast tissue may become less firm and may drape differently than during your teen and child-bearing years. Keep up with your breast self exams in these years too, so that the normal changes are familiar to you. Less dense breast tissue will seem to have more lumps and bumps, but remember that 90% of breast lumps are benign.
