WHEN IS TORTURE NOT TORTURE? WHEN IT IS JUST NOT IDENTIFIED AS SUCH!
The issue of torturing our enemies is back on page one for a change. And to think how misguided I have been to have thought that the flap over the U.S. authorizing torture of our enemies had not definitvely been put to rest. I mistakenly thought that screaming at the accussed was Ok but nearly drowning a suspected terrorist using a method called water boarding was officially judged to be a bit over the top.
Now a recent article in the NY Times indicates that there have actually been two policies on torture. One for public consumption and the other for private. You got to be kidding, I thought upon reading this revelation. My relaxed state instantly returned to an uneasy questioning of our leadership. There must be a mistake, I thought. And subsequent events have proved I was right and foolish to worry.
Boy what a relief! I am so glad President Bush has cleared up the matter once and for all. It is good to know he would never authorize America to use torture. Now I can rest easy and not have to worry about who to vote for in the next election. Might as well vote Republican to keep the continuity clear. It is so refreshing that President Bush has become a convert to transparency having given up his obession with secrecy and deceit replacing it with a policy of justice for all. And to think I was really getting worried there for a while.
Who knows - if this new found openess continues we might well expect Vice President Cheney to reveal who were the actual participants attending the infamous oil meeting at the beginning of the Bush administration as well as revealing what was actually discussed and what policy decisions were adopted.
Isn't it refreshing and reassuring to know that our leaders have finally become dedicated to actually practicing what they preach - especially those things they affirm we should all stand for - previous to each new Presidential election? |
