Q: WHEN IS A PLANET NOT A PLANET? A:WHEN IT IS NAMED PLUTO
No big deal, you might say, if you happen to be reading about the revisionist revolution happening in the ranks of the astronomer's most elite - progressing even as we communicate. This august body - full of themselves -are redefining the criterion for an object in outer space to be worthy of the name - planet.
So what, you continue, who cares? I will answer your question with another question? How many planets are there in our solar system? Nine, you instantly shout out, adding weren't you forced to take a course in general science?
And of course you would be accurate, completely justifying your rising testiness. That is until today. For today - or soon after - the astronomers are stripping Pluto of its designated title of the 9th planet in our solar system. {Sticklers for detail will counter that a compromise is afoot to make Pluto an "honorary" planet with an asterisk next to its name."
Now, increasingly irritated but likely stirred, you wonder what is this writer getting at? Well I will tell you and when I am finished perhaps you will appreciate the vast implications such an arbitrary short sighted "spaced out" decision has for mankind.
Let me not beat around the bush {fortunately it is not George this time.}Whereas the astronomers believe they are making an intellectual advance for science, what apparently they are not aware of, or frankly maybe very aware of , is that their "starry eyed" decision is going to set back all of the steady progress of esoteric astrology made over centuries by who knows what incalcuable amounts.
Really? you respond, now that I have finally caught your attention. Tell me more. I could write a book about the implications of this dumb down revisionist policy by these so called men of reason but because space does not permit me to do this {I am not really certain why not} I will simply outline {or is it outline simply} my most pressing points.
First - I ask the reader to suspend judgment concerning the validity and accuracy of astrological claims. Secondarily, in the name of objectivity, it is important that the reader who is truly open to even out of the box possibilities to make a distinction between the kinds of daily newspaper horoscope readings inaccurately taken as representative of astrology versus really high level, sophisticated readings rendered by professional astrologers who really know how to nail your particular planet, house, sign horoscope taking the form of a truly resonant interpretation of your past, present, and future.
Enough already, what about Pluto? Ok - here it comes. According to astrological theory each plant is associated with a vital realm of human experience. Thus the sun is associated with a person's core identity. Mars with a persons aggression. Venus/ love. Jupiter/ expansion. Saturn/contraction and the likes. You get it. So what is Pluto associated with? Thought you would never get around to asking.
Pluto may be small and distant but it is no trivial planet when it comes to esoteric influences on mankind. Rather than words come from me that might be taken as self serving - better you read the words of an enthusiastic and apparently fair minded astrological student writing a review in Amazon for a book called Pluto by Jeff Green:
"When I began reading Pluto: The Evolutionary Journey of the Soul, I was impressed to learn Jeff had spent two years in a Vedantic Temple; completely sure he must have a 9th house Pluto in his chart; in awe of his astute observations regarding the two co-existing desires of the Soul; and a little too smug about where I thought I placed in the four natural evolutionary conditions.
This is the book that defined a neglected, greatly over-looked, far-away little planet that no one knew much about. It thoroughly explains every nuance of Pluto; the obsessions, compulsions, taboos, extremes; the two ways we experience its power and how to understand and accept transformation. Jeff covers the three reactions to the evolutionary impulse; the four ways Pluto affects evolution in our lives; the relationship of Pluto with the moon's nodes; Pluto retrograde; the meaning and effect of Pluto in each of the houses; in aspect with other planets; by transit, progression, and solar return; case studies; and charts I've never found anywhere else. The section on Pluto in aspect demystifies the meanings of not only the major and minor aspects, but also those you just can't seem to find in any other texts; the septile, quincunx, sesquiquadrate, even the novile. It's a treasure trove for the student and a great reference guide for the professional. My old copy is highlighted, underlined, noted, dog-eared, tattered, enshrined in a leather cover, always at hand, and held in great regard.
This is a profound book by the pioneer of Pluto that answers the questions, "Who am I? Why am I here?" and "What is my soul's true purpose in this life?" This is the book that answers the prayer to understand the conditions and seeming injustices of life. This is a book that confirms your suspicions that astrology isn't really about fortune-telling. It is the must have book for anyone who is serious about learning the language of the Universe and the meaning of life." L. Valentine
Now do you see why I am up in arms, trying to shout out to the world, to protest this calculated dumbing down - this trivialization of the "spiritual and the philosophical" - this elitist union obviously trying to cause chaos and confusion in the ranks of astrologers - high and low?
This short sighted and anti intellectual, anti spiritual and anti philosophical travesty of justice must be stopped immediately. Call your senator, ask for a private one to one with the President, flood the astronomical society offices with letters, and even pods of protest.
Nature abhors a vacuum. To permit this outrage to become official is the first step on an inevitable slippery slope to who knows where. Today it is Pluto demoted to an asterisk - tomorrow - perhaps Uranus. I hesitate speculating further. To do so stirs catastrophe anxiety.
I hope I have made my point - and then some.
