Kansas Board Approves Challenges to Evolution
New Standards Also Redefine Science
... Among the most controversial changes was a redefinition of science itself, so that it would not be explicitly limited to natural explanations. (11/9/05) New York Times
SOCRATES WOULD HAVE BEEN DELIGHTED
Socrates challenged the youth of Athens to challenge their parents and other authorities first assumptions about the nature of reality and the ways in which we access knowledge of and about reality. I wonder if the majority of the Kansas school board who voted for their challenge to evolution and science are fans of Socrates? They may be surprised by what they have set in motion.
Now that it is almost official to challenge basic assumptions then presumably it is fair game {even encouraged} to examine any and all basic assumptions.
What follows are some fruitful basic assumptions that if challenged would certainly stretch the minds of students:
- If if the alternative theory intelligent design is included in the curriculum is it not equally reasonable, fair, intellectually honest, objective, and exceedingly interesting to include the alternative theory of unintelligent design?
- In this connection, should not attention be paid to the alternative theory of atheism?
To be objective in considering an in-depth understanding of the nature of change it is in incumbent of teachers to include the subject matter of speculative philosophy, depth psychology, the nature of spirituality, and even aspects of the esoteric occult.
I truly hope that the school board of Kansas and any other boards who wish to go this route appreciate how revolutionary their position is in fact. If the logical implications - suggested above - are carried out they will be responsible for reversing the tide of a generalized dumbing down so prevalent in our culture.
Thank you all for your wisdom and vision.
